College Parents pay 3 World Series of Poker Buy-Ins!

O.K. now that I have the attention of parents and college students everywhere. (lol) Yes, there may be a parent in some remote universe that will ante up for three (3) $10,000 WSOP buy-ins, but for the rest of us it’s just a happy thought. But it does demonstrate the value of what parents are giving when they pay for college tuition. For this reason I think we should cut parents some slack when they, in turn, fantasize about us spending endless hours studying, learning and excelling in the world of academia. Or if they worry about the potential of gambling addiction, as most college students are at the prime target age for all sorts of addictions.

So how can poker be a good thing? Well first off anything in excess can have negative consequences, so moderation, common sense and self control are key. But just off the top of my head here are a few positives about poker:

1. Because it makes math finally relevant.
2. Because poker is a game of skill that sharpens the mind.
3. Because you learn and practice money management skills.
4. Because you learn how to really listen and read the nonverbal cues of others.
5. Because it’s a social game that gets you away from your PlayStation 3.
6. Because it has the potential to make you money.
7. Because, because, because…

The popularity of Texas Hold’em really got a big boost when the movie Rounder came out. But these days its television shows such as World Poker Tour, Celebrity Poker, World Series of Poker, High Stakes Poker, Poker After Dark, and a host of others that have introduced us to top players and key strategies. I think poker can be a fun and profitable activity for college students as long as they keep karma on their side by playing for entertainment purposes and with money previously earmarked for clubs, booze or other consumables. ;O) I recently spoke with a friend that stated because he wants to excel at poker (in addition to school work of course), he has quite naturally exchanged kegs for chips. He wants to be clear headed when playing poker, so drugs and alcohol get sent to the back of the bus.

I can’t help but wonder if there are parents out there that have paid the WSOP $10,000 buy-in for their child. If you are one such lucky person, be sure to leave a comment! Also for those college players looking for a sponsor other than old mom or dad a good place to check out is Rounder Auction.

Have a nice day,
Crazy Lady of Poker
